Airbourne's Fortunes Take Off Again

THE roller-coaster journey of Warrnambool rock band Airbourne took another dramatic turn yesterday when the band signed a worldwide deal with international label Roadrunner Records in New York.

The deal ensures that the band's debut album, Runnin' Wild, will be available in most markets around the world later this year.

In Australia and New Zealand, the band is still represented by EMI Records, which will release the album this weekend.

After being signed by Capitol Records for a seven-figure deal in 2005, Airbourne hit turbulence when the US rock label culled it along with 70 per cent of Capitol's bands. But the band was allowed to leave with the ownership of the recording, which it essentially obtained free. "This will be the best thing that happened to them," Airbourne's manager, Gregg Donovan, told The Age at the time.

Yesterday, Donovan said the new deal put the band back on track with its plan to "take more great Aussie rock'n'roll to the world". -- PATRICK DONOVAN
